Game Recording, a brand new built-in system for Steam that makes it easier for players to not only create, but share, gameplay footage of their favorite games, is now available to check as a part of a brand new beta that advertises timeline markers, game mode indicators, and other unique features, Valve has announced. This feature is, moreover, fully functional on Steam Deck, Valve’s handheld PC, the corporate said.
Easy methods to join the beta, with two ways to record:
- Settings > Interface > Beta Participation (Select either Beta option)
- Settings > Game Recording (Select Background or On Demand recording)
Key features include:
- “Save footage and related timeline info as a Clip that may be watched, edited, shared and/or exported later.”
- “Save an MP4 of your current selection.”
- “Convert chosen recording to MP4 able to paste anywhere.”
- “Send a Clip to a different device (ex. out of your Steam Deck to your desktop PC).”
- “Send an MP4 via the Steam Mobile App or a QR code.”
- “Create a short lived Steam link to MP4 video.”

Steam Game Recording has been designed with the goal of taking as little computer resources away from the sport you might be playing as possible. It takes advantage of NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards to remove many of the performance cost of making video recordings. When run on systems without those graphics cards, the systems CPU is used to create video recordings which can cause a noticeable performance impact on those systems.
