Gareth Southgate has failed as England manager – because he has never won anything in eight years.
That’s the decision from talkSPORT pundit and France legend Emmanuel Petit, who insisted England needs to be doing higher with the standard that they’ve.
Speaking continue to exist talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein and Andy Townsend, Petit said: “He jogs my memory, sometimes, of Didier Deschamps with the standard that he has and on the bench as well. An enormous group of quality players.
“We’re so frustrated because he cannot reach the head with them and to make them play beautiful football, romantic football.
“So, yes, it’s frustrating to observe, it should be frustrating to play as a player and he hasn’t won any medals with England.
“He has been manager for the last eight years, he did reach the semi-final [of the 2018 World Cup]. He did some good runs in competitions.
“But, for me, he has failed. Easy as that. Having been the manager for therefore long, with the standard of English football, he must have won at the least one medal.”
Southgate has come under fire for his variety of play at Euro 2024 after failing to light up the tournament despite having world-class players similar to Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Phil Foden.
But England are within the quarter-final where they face Switzerland having topped their group, albeit by scoring two goals against Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark.
Southgate took over in 2016 with the country in disarray following the scandal of Sam Allardyce and just months after Roy Hodgson resigned following defeat to Iceland on the European Championship.
Since then, the previous Middlesbrough coach has taken charge of 99 games, winning 63, and has lost just 17.
He has also overseen seven knockout fixture victories, greater than every other England coach.
When the Three Lions line up on Saturday, they may be in a distinct formation amid clamour for change this tournament.
talkSPORT understands Southgate is considering changing his side to a back-three to negate Switzerland, who also play in such a way.
England haven’t played three on the back from the beginning of a knockout fixture for the reason that Euro 2020 final, which went to penalties against Italy.
England will face Switzerland on Saturday afternoon on the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf with the match being exclusively broadcast on talkSPORT.
