Saturday night Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his unified super middleweight crown against Edgar Berlanga. The fight wound up being an entire and total mismatch as many expected getting into.
Canelo was just too smart, too expert, too crafty, too consistent, and too experienced for Berlanga. To his credit, Berlanga put forth a brave and admirable effort, but he was no match for Canelo.
Since losing against Dmitry Bivol back in May 2022, Canelo has not been involved in lots of fights which have fans especially excited. Probably the most interesting matchup was his third fight against Golovkin, but by that time GGG was getting older and on the slide. Following that victory, Canelo has beaten Jon Ryder, undisputed 154 pound champion Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and most recently the win against Berlanga.
Following his victory against Berlanga, on the DAZN broadcast they suggested three logical options for Canelo’s next opponent: Terence Crawford, Dmitry Bivol, and David Benavidez.

Benavidez is the fight many fans have been wanting for years now, but for various reasons it has not come together, and that seems unlikely to vary any time soon. A possible rematch against Bivol is something Canelo has expressed interest in, provided Bivol wins his upcoming October 12 match against Artur Beterbiev which shall be for the undisputed light heavyweight crown. A fight between Canelo and Crawford is something Turki Al-Sheikh has expressed interest in, until he apparently lost interest after hearing Canelo’s demands, but it is a fight that Crawford still wants, despite the very fact he has never fought at 160 let alone 168, and Crawford only had one fight at 154.
