The recent edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), held from September 27 to September 29 in Abu Dhabi, has sparked controversy after Kannada filmmaker Hemanth Rao called out the event organizers for what he described as disrespectful treatment. IIFA Utsavam, a segment dedicated to the South Indian film industries—Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada—left Rao and his team deeply upset.

Hemanth Rao Calls Out IIFA for Disrespect
Hemanth Rao, known for guiding acclaimed Kannada movies like Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu and Sapta Saagaradaache Ello, took to Instagram to specific his frustrations. In an in depth post, Rao shared that he and his music director, Charan Raj, were made to attend for hours, only to find that they might not receive the awards they’d been promised.
Rao described his experience as “a large inconvenience and intensely disrespectful.” Despite being within the industry for over a decade and attending various award shows, this experience stood out for all of the unsuitable reasons. “For context, I used to be sat till 3 AM within the morning only to understand there was no award. The identical happened to my Music Director: Charan Raj,” Rao wrote.
No Mention of Nominees
Rao also criticized the best way the awards were conducted, mentioning that no nominees were mentioned throughout the presentation. “It is your award. You’ll be able to give it to whoever you must. That is your alternative!! I have not won MANY awards and have not lost sleep over it, so these grapes aren’t sour,” he said. Nonetheless, what troubled him was the dearth of transparency in the method. “The format this 12 months was just handy out the award. The nominees weren’t even mentioned.”
