Liam Payne died on the age of 31, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday, October 16. The late English vocalist and former One Direction band member’s death shocked fans around the globe. Outside of his successful music profession, Payne was also a father of 1 — his 7-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, whom he shared with ex Cheryl Cole. How Did Liam Payne Die?
In keeping with multiple outlets, local authorities in Buenos Aires, Argentina, responded to an emergency call, and Payne was found dead after having fallen from his hotel’s third-floor room. Reuters reported that police within the Palermo neighborhood were called in response to an “aggressive man who may very well be under the results of medicine and alcohol.” The outlet also reported that emergency responders found Payne dead within the hotel’s interior patio.
Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti explained how responders tried to resuscitate Liam and identified that he had a “cranial fracture” after he fell, in keeping with La Nacion.
“Our role was to move there quickly, give medical attention, and take a look at to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life,” Crescenti said. “Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and very serious injuries that led to his immediate death. The team could do absolutely nothing. There was no resuscitation since it was confirmed that he had died. The entire body had very serious injuries.”
It’s currently unclear what caused Payne to fall from his hotel room.

Payne was seemingly in Argentina to attend his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan‘s concert in Argentina. The late “Strip That Down” artist was seen dancing the famous “Macarena” with fans on the show. Videos of the moment circulated on social media, along with one other TikTok clip of him sweetly greeting fans from a box suite on the concert venue.
Was One Direction Going to Reunite?
Payne and his former band members, Niall, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, have expressed an interest in a possible One Direction reunion.
During a 2020 interview with PEOPLE, Payne identified that he couldn’t “promise” anything but was still “hopeful” that One Direction would get back together someday.
“I can’t promise any reunion plans since it just isn’t it right away,” the “Teardrops” singer told the publication. “I at all times put it right down to music language because everyone’s releasing in the meanwhile with, like, two years price of promo. But, you realize, it still seems very hopeful in that department. I’m beginning to think it’s gonna occur in some unspecified time in the future. So, it’s exciting.”
Payne also discussed how he had reconnected with Harry, Niall, Zayn and Louis through the COVID-19 lockdown. During his interview, the U.K. native noted that all of them “hadn’t spoken for some time.”
“It’s been nice to open up the channels of communication again because we hadn’t spoken for some time,” Payne began, before adding, “And I feel all of us needed that after spending a lot time together — simply to work out our own selves as people because everyone knows what we’re within the band. … And it’s just nice to see everyone turned out to be nice people, you realize?”
