Khamzat Chimaev‘s MMA journey began in Sweden where he began training at Allstar Training Center in Stockholm, with the likes of former UFC title challenger, Alexander Gustafsson and Ilir Latifi.
Once ‘Borz’ became a formidable force within the cage and located his way into the UFC, he then began to go to different gyms to sharpen his game.
Khamzat Chimaev details training with Sean Strickland as he looks to grab his title shot
In addition to training frequently with former UFC star, Darren Till, Chimaev has detailed previous training sessions with former middleweight champion and now division rival, Sean Strickland.
Despite Chimaev being set to tackle Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 this coming Saturday, even with a win over ‘The Reaper’ he may not find himself because the fighter to challenge Dricus Du Plessis.
UFC CEO Dana White recently revealed that the promotion is planning on having Du Plessis rematch Strickland in February 2025, delaying Chimaev’s title charge.
Nonetheless, ahead of the largest fight of his profession up to now, ‘Borz’ has detailed how sparring sessions used to go against Strickland.
“I believe now it’s going good for Du Plessis, I believe he’s more motivated getting more cash and he’s completely satisfied with that so he’ll fight for his belt, Sean being there, I don’t think he cares about if he wins or loses he just fights and has money,” Chimaev told Michael Bisping.
“We sparred with (Strickland) and trained with him so I don’t know, we’ve been good once we’ve been within the gym but when I’m going back to Sweden he starts to tweet and do some things, he didn’t like once I said I tap him out… (Yeah I tapped him out) over and over, chokes, various things, you already know.
“He’s good, his strength is sweet, he’s fighter but, he’s a troublesome guy, tough dude but I said what everyone see’s within the gym so, that’s it,” Chimaev continued.
Chimaev desires to fight for a title at any weight class with a win at UFC 308
Since his emergence within the UFC in 2020, the 30-year-old has fluttered between each 170lbs and 185lbs, together with his recent move as much as middleweight seemingly being something the UFC advised following continuous weight misses.
Having said that, with him likely not getting the following middleweight title shot, even with a win over Whittaker, ‘Borz’ has claimed that he would move back right down to welterweight to fight for the title, and even move as much as light heavyweight to tackle Alex Pereira.
Current champion, Belal Muhammad is scheduled to make the primary defense of his title at UFC 310 when he takes on Shavkat Rakhmonov.
“I would like to fight for the title, it doesn’t matter which weight class, Shavkat and this guy (Muhammad) are gonna fight for the title after which Du Plessis is gonna fight for the title, Alex (Pereira) is gonna fight with any individual, I don’t know.
“After all, I’ve all the time been open (to fighting Pereira) so I do know stylistically this match for me is far easier than other guys. In striking I’m honest, I do know the guy can knock me out… But I’m among the best grapplers and wrestlers,” Chimaev flirted at the thought of a fight against Alex Pereira.
