Ryan Reynolds could be the king of comedy and chaos now, but even Deadpool’s got a cringe-worthy skeleton tucked away. The 40-year-old actor spilled the beans in Variety’s Actors on Actors series with Taraji P. Henson, confessing to an audition disaster that also haunts him. And yep, it involved singing. It seems Reynolds’ voice wasn’t exactly hitting the proper notes or any notes.
Reynolds admitted he’s “never been a terrific auditioner,” but this one? Oh, it’s an entire other level. “I’m a nervous singer,” he revealed, explaining how his vocal swagger only comes alive within the shower. “You realize if you’re in there, and also you’re like, ‘That is pretty good’? Then you definately step out into the true world, and my voice is sort of a hammer slamming everyone within the face.” Oof.
Things went from bad to worse when he auditioned for a movie that required singing. “It was pretty bad,” Ryan Reynolds admitted. “I look back and think, ‘What if that tape surfaces sooner or later? That’ll be the death of me.’ Yeah. That was pretty awful.” Someone get this man a karaoke redemption arc—stat.
However the singing fiasco isn’t the one time Reynolds struck out. He revealed one other audition fail that left him questioning his profession decisions. “I auditioned and failed for the Coen brothers. Hail, Caesar! was it? No, it was the one before that,” he shared, along with his signature wit still intact.
Reynolds painted a hilarious picture of the experience, joking, “It wasn’t the proper fit, mostly because they’re very high class. They were just quietly shaking their heads, like, ‘What are you doing here? Do you’ve got a SAG card?’” Imagine Ryan Reynolds, in all his wisecracking glory, attempting to impress the Coen brothers. It’s a mental image value cherishing.
While the Free Guy star has built an empire on his sharp humor and charm, his audition flops prove that even essentially the most charismatic actors face some brutal “what-was-I-thinking” moments. And yet, Reynolds’ ability to laugh at himself only makes him more relatable. Who hasn’t sung their heart out within the shower, only to crash and burn in front of an audience?
From singing disasters to misfired auditions, Reynolds’ journey to stardom wasn’t all smooth sailing. But hey, those cringe-worthy moments just add to his legend. In spite of everything, if a botched singing audition and a Coen brothers fail didn’t stop him, nothing would. As Reynolds once put it: “What if that tape surfaces? That’ll be the death of me.” Let’s just hope it’s not his next Netflix project.
