Peter Wright has opened up on his respectful embrace with Luke Humphries after his upset win.
Wright took on world No.1 Humphries as a big underdog on the PDC World Championship, and needed to call on his previous experience as a former two-time champion to dethrone the present king.
But incredibly ‘Snake Bite’ did exactly that, ousting the leading player 4-1 in a showing of oche brilliance and charisma.
The seismic upset shook the darting world and the group at Ally Pally, who were scratching their eyes in the course of the raptures of celebrations.
Each players had spoken of their very own ambitions of winning the tournament beforehand, with Wright suggesting he had the tools to beat Humphries.
‘Cool Hand’ had responded by suggesting his legacy in the game was closing in on Wright’s despite their difference in playing time.
Despite the verbal jabs, the pair shared a respectful and emotional embrace after the shock proceedings unfolded.
Wright has since opened up on what was said during an interview with talkSPORT.
He said: “Yeah he was just saying that the media get carried away with silly comments.
“He said that he didn’t say the things that it actually got here across like.
“I said Luke the exact same, that’s just the best way it goes a while. He wished me all the very best.
“He’s a beautiful guy, an actual family guy and I wish him all the very best moving forward.
“He’s been a improbable world champion, he’s done the whole lot for the PDC and for the game.
“He goes all around the globe doing interviews and stuff like Luke Littler has.
“They have been spreading the sport fantastically.”
It was an incredible display from Wright, who has had a torrid 12 months on the tour as he’s been largely unable to duplicate his best.
But incredibly he finds himself within the quarter-finals of the tournament against all odds, in a draw that has now opened as much as latest scales.
A victory in his next match could arrange an enormous showdown with Luke Littler within the semi-final, if the ‘The Nuke’ is in a position to win his next two matches.
The Scotsman himself appears to be an actual contender to go all the best way now.
But he insists he is not one among the favourites to win the tournament, given his previous form, and plans to take it daily.
He added: “Yeah it will be a dream to win three world titles to match Michael Van Gerwen.
“I’d beat Jockey Wilson and Gary Anderson before they get it, but there’s a approach to go yet.
“I’m not a favorite. That’s ridiculous. There may be an extended approach to go yet.
“I make Callan Rydz favourite, he’s the one playing improbable darts.
“He’s the person to observe, not me.”
