On Tuesday, January 21, Instagram user @livebitez took to the platform to share apparent livestream footage recorded from the group on the inaugural ball. Within the video, Nelly is seen taking the stage as a narrator’s voice seemingly shares the rapper’s life story with the group.
Moreover, the narration explained that Nelly was born on a military base in Austin, Texas, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Moreover, the narration shared that various members of Nelly’s family have served within the armed forces.
“Only in America are you able to come from the streets of St. Louis to the White House,” the narration stated before Nelly’s performance began.

Prior to taking the stage, Nelly opened up about his decision again while chatting with ABC News. The rapper reiterated that he believes it’s an “honor” to perform for the president, and he seemingly “never thought” it could be possible.
“It’s not political for me. For me, the political part is over. He won, and growing up, I used to be taught to respect the office, so Nelly’s here,” he said.
Moreover, Nelly explained why he didn’t back down from the initial criticism he received for his alternative.
