Mumbai’s Chief Selector at Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal Over Ranji Trophy Performance

“Our defeat against J&K was worst ever…”: Mumbai’s Chief Selector at Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal Over Ranji Trophy Performance

Mumbai cricket fans were left in shock after their team suffered an embarrassing loss to Jammu and Kashmir within the Ranji Trophy group stage. This defeat, despite the presence of Indian stars like Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, led to strong criticism from Mumbai’s chief selector Sanjay Patil, who openly questioned the intent and commitment of those senior players.

Mumbai’s Shocking Loss to Jammu and Kashmir

Mumbai’s campaign within the Ranji Trophy took a serious hit once they suffered a shocking defeat by the hands of Jammu and Kashmir. Provided that six Indian international players were a part of the XI, this result was unexpected. Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Shardul Thakur, and Ajinkya Rahane were all available for the match, but their performances did not make an impact.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Underwhelming Returns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently implemented a directive requiring all contracted players to take part in domestic cricket. While this move goals to strengthen domestic tournaments, Mumbai’s loss shows that mere presence isn’t enough—performance matters.

Rohit Sharma continued his poor run in red-ball cricket, scoring only 3 and 28 in the sport. Yashasvi Jaiswal also did not impress, managing just 4 and 26. Their struggles significantly weakened Mumbai’s batting order and raised concerns about their adaptability in domestic cricket.

Sanjay Patil’s Blunt Criticism

Mumbai’s chief selector, Sanjay Patil, was vocal in his disappointment over the team’s defeat. He identified that merely being available for a Ranji Trophy match wasn’t enough—players needed to contribute meaningfully.

His frustration was evident when he stated: “I’m very clear on this. Considering our defeat against J&K, which got here despite the presence of six India cricketers in our lineup, which was very disappointing, I need each SKY and Dube not to only take part in this Ranji Trophy knockout match, but perform well, and contribute to Mumbai’s victory. I’m still upset on the J&K defeat, which I feel was our worst ever. To accommodate the India players in that match, we needed to deprive a couple of talented children.”

Patil added, “Mumbai needs players who can perform and make the side win games, something which was missing in that match. The India players need to understand it’s not nearly being ‘available’ for that game. The culture of Mumbai cricket has all the time been about giving your 100% if you find yourself playing for Mumbai.”

Despite their poor performance, Mumbai managed to qualify for the quarterfinals due to a win against Meghalaya and Baroda dropping points. Nonetheless, this setback exposed cracks of their squad selection and strategy.

The Impact on Young Players Like Ayush Mhatre

One of the vital debated facets of the team selection was the exclusion of Ayush Mhatre, Mumbai’s most consistent batsman this season with 413 runs, including two centuries. His omission in favor of big-name players sparked discussions about fairness and merit in team selection.

As Mumbai gears up for the quarterfinals against Haryana, Patil has warned Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube that simply showing up won’t be enough—they should deliver match-winning performances.
