Kanye West Proves There Are Limits to Elon Musk’s Free Speech Pledge

It’s 2025 and Kanye West has again created headlines for the express rants that he posted on X, the social media platform formerly generally known as Twitter.

Although he has since deleted his account of his own accord, it has forced many to query how much Elon Musk will intervene during future incidents, especially when he has stated previously that he’s a “free speech absolutist” who didn’t want to position any limits on what individuals could say on his platform.

After his $44 billion offer to purchase Twitter, Musk tweeted, “Free speech is the bedrock of functionary democracy” and declared himself a “free speech absolutist.”

In a 2022 tweet, Musk explained that he bought Twitter “because it’s important to the longer term of civilization to have a typical digital town square, where a wide selection of beliefs might be debated in a healthy manner, without restoring to violence,” adding, “There may be currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and much left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society.”

Although he admitted that Twitter “cannot change into a free-for-all hellscape, where anything might be said with no consequences,” Musk has come under fire for relaxing rules on hate speech and creating the “anything goes” environment that he once cautioned against.

Over the past few weeks, Ye has been ranting and raving on social media, covering every thing from Diddy’s arrest to his wife, Bianca Censori, and their infamous Grammys stunt where she shed her black coat on the red carpet to disclose a sheer dress that left nothing to the imagination.

“I actually have dominion over my wife. This ain’t no woke as feminist sh-t,” he tweeted last week. “She’s with a billionaire. Why would she hearken to any of you dumb a– broke broke b-tches. After just a few days of antisemitic, misogynistic, and racist rants, Elon Musk labeled Ye’s account “NSFW” after the Yeezy founder began repeatedly posting porn and spamming his followers with unwanted adult content.

“Given what he has posted, his account is now classified as NSFW. It is best to not be seeing that anymore,” Musk tweeted in response to a concerned user.

Nonetheless, many didn’t find Ye’s pornography as alarming as his own admission that he identifies as a Nazi.

Ye’s antisemitic tirade continued the Friday before the Super Bowl, when he tweeted, “Any Jewish person who does business with me must know I don’t like or trust any Jewish person,” as per screenshots obtained by TMZ.

After clarifying that he was sober while he was tweeting, Ye insisted, “I can say Jew as much as I would like. I can say Hitler as much as I would like. Matter [of] fact, I do say it when I would like.”

He also clearly stated, “I’m a Nazi” in all capital letters at 3:21 AM on Friday, February 7, before occurring to sell $20 shirts with a swastikas design on his Yeezy website. He then decided to remove himself from X, but remains to be energetic on Instagram.

Kanye West, who now identifies as Ye, is someone who likes to toe the road and see how far he can go before the purpose of no return. His Grammys stunt was just testing the waters. Within the weeks that followed, he followed it up by posting adult content, identifying as a Nazi, and even calling Diddy his “twin.” It’s unclear what, if anything, Ye could gain from his controversial content except notoriety.

Elon Musk wants to maintain X as an area where anyone can say anything without limits, but amid reports that even he unfollowed Ye before he removed his own account, it’s clear that there’s some “speech” that even the Tesla CEO doesn’t need to be exposed to, and, judging by lots of the comments online, it’s probably not something anyone desired to see. Sure, there’s all the time the block button, but activists will argue that Ye needs to be prevented from saying it in any respect.

Speech is made to speak, often with the goal that one or each parties can profit from the exchange. There may be nothing entertaining, informative, or educational in what Ye has been posting. It only indicates a troubling cry for help that he may unfortunately never receive.

There’s an old saying that goes: “The proper to swing your fist ends on the tip of an individual’s nose.” At what point do words typed on a pc screen equate to the harm done by physical violence? I do not have a solution. I do not think any of us do. But I hope it’s one which Elon Musk is a minimum of considering… if he is not too busy taking on the federal government, that’s.
