Mario Melchiot says Ruben Amorim is faced with a ‘big problem’ at Manchester United, with ‘incredible’ players like Alejandro Garnacho appearing ‘lost’ since he took charge.
Amorim has found himself under mounting pressure at Old Trafford in recent weeks having didn’t regular the ship since taking on the reins from Erik ten Hag back in November.
Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by the hands of Ange Postecoglou’s depleted Tottenham side, United’s eighth loss within the Premier League under Amorim, left the club stranded down in fifteenth place, just 12 points above the relegation zone.
While there was no sign of a so-called new-manager bounce, though, it’s understood Amorim’s job isn’t under threat and the Portuguese has repeatedly underlined that he isn’t concerned for his future.
‘I’m not nervous,’ Amorim told the BBC following the Red Devils’ latest loss to Spurs.
‘I understand our fans, what the media give it some thought. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst.
‘The remaining I’m not desirous about. I’m here to assist my players. I understand my situation, my job, I’m confident on my work and I just wish to win games.’

Outwardly at the least, Amorim stays confident he has the backing of United bosses. Nonetheless, the previous Sporting head coach will probably be under no illusions that one other defeat away to struggling Everton this weekend could be nothing in need of catastrophic.
‘I feel when Erik ten Hag watches it he will probably be considering, “This is similar thing I used to be going through”,’ ex-Chelsea and Netherlands defender Melchiot told ESPN.
‘One among the important thing things with Amorim is he comes there and together with your background and where you come from, your team was at a certain level but it surely was clearly not the extent where you might be at once.

‘So how he brings it across, within the sense of, “No, now we have to complete the season after which take a look at next season…”.
‘But that is Manchester United, people don’t think and other people don’t talk like that.
‘Him saying that is unquestionably going to cause friction with some people because fans and the expectation… they will probably be considering, “Are you considering it’s normal for us to be in this case? Are you going to assist us get out of it?”… you don’t want them to begin getting in your back for that reason.’

While Melchiot has some sympathy for Amorim, he criticised the United boss for leaving his defence completely ‘exposed’ along with his team selection against Tottenham.
‘I do understand what he’s talking about because a lot of the team isn’t built by him,’ he continued.
‘You possibly can see the situation he was in, he put some many young kids on the bench [against Tottenham]. There was one experienced player on it and Casemiro had to begin again.

‘But one among the things I don’t understand: if Casemiro starts in your team and [Bruno] Fernandes is your midfielder, you recognize he desires to go forward. He was sort of disciplined he did a whole lot of labor.
‘But I ask myself why don’t you begin holding it really tight. No, he exposed the team because he’s on the lookout for the switch.
‘What I’m asking him now’s to watch out. Don’t expose your team to be too creative because at this point you don’t have the players to do this.’

In keeping with Melchiot, there appears to be a worrying insecurity inside United’s squad with Amorim on the helm and the decline in type of a player of Garnacho’s undoubted quality is a serious concern.
‘One advantage he has is that the players he has there should not his hand. Now we have to recollect, he wanted the job later and he got the job earlier,’ he added.
‘Okay, he got the job earlier because there was no selection anymore. But he knows now that it was a good larger surprise than it was before.
‘The arrogance is so low in that team. Now we have to do not forget that before he got here in, one among the children, for instance, Garnacho, was incredible. Have a look at him now… he looks lost!
‘I don’t see the child that may hurt a defender, can dribble at him, take him on.
‘If I take a look at [Rasmus] Hojlund… he works really hard but where are the goals going to come back from? Sometimes I say to myself: let my striker work less so he has more energy to attain for me.
‘Those things should not at Manchester United, they’re not dangerous, they don’t create anything in order that’s why they’ve a giant problem.’
