No More Free IPL Streaming on JioHotstar; Know More About Subscription Plans

Cricket fans will not enjoy free streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on JioHotstar, the newly launched streaming platform resulting from the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar under the JioStar enterprise.

The platform, introduced on Friday, has revamped its streaming model, requiring users to subscribe to a plan starting at ₹149 to look at IPL matches. Previously, JioCinema allowed free IPL streaming since acquiring the broadcasting rights for five years in 2023 for $3 billion. Nevertheless, starting in 2025, only just a few minutes of every match can be available totally free, after which users can be redirected to a subscription page.

Subscription Plans and Features

JioHotstar offers multiple subscription tiers that cater to different user preferences. The fundamental plan starts at ₹149 ($1.72), while a premium ad-free experience is accessible for ₹499 ($5.75) for 3 months.

The platform goals to reinforce user experience with ultra-HD 4K streaming, AI-powered insights, real-time statistics overlays, and multi-angle viewing options. Moreover, JioHotstar will function the first hub for prestigious sports events, including ICC tournaments, the IPL, WPL, and domestic leagues comparable to Pro Kabaddi and the ISL.

Impact of the Reliance-Disney Merger

This shift in IPL streaming policy follows the $8.5 billion merger between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney’s Indian media assets, forming the JioStar enterprise. In response to insiders, the choice aligns with the strategy of initially offering free content to draw users before implementing subscription charges.

The move signifies JioHotstar’s effort to compete with global streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime in India’s $28-billion media and entertainment market. While the brand new model may disappoint cricket enthusiasts accustomed to free access, JioHotstar goals to supply a premium and immersive viewing experience for its subscribers.
