5 Ways Employees Can Stay Relevant In Their Profession

I read an article recently from Lolly Daskal titled “AI Will Replace You: Leaders Who Refuse to Evolve Will Be Left Behind”. It’s read price trying out. Here on HR Bartender, we’ve been talking about artificial intelligence (AI) lots recently. And I’ve suggested that folks should start doing little experiments to learn more about AI and its capabilities.  

Today, I first need to add my support to Daskal’s article. Employees who refuse to evolve will likely be left behind. Period. Obviously, if your organization, industry, job is adopting AI at a rapid pace, then learning AI is vital to your profession. And even in case your role doesn’t have numerous exposure to AI straight away, it could be price it to learn more about AI. 

But artificial intelligence isn’t the one thing that keeps an worker relevant. The business world is changing, and we want to not sleep to this point on every thing that’s happening. 

  1. Stay on top of industry trends and customer needs. What’s happening in your industry? What do customers want? Is your organization making changes to their products and/or services? The answers to those questions can have a direct bearing in your role and the stuff you work on. 
  1. Think in regards to the knowledge, skills, and talents (KSAs) to your job. If you happen to haven’t done it recently, it could be interesting to review your job description. Are you doing what it says try to be doing? Are there elements to the job that you simply’d wish to learn more about? This may very well be helpful in developing career-related goals. 
  1. Be certain that your goals align with the corporate’s goals. Many organizations use the concept of cascading goals. The corporate’s goals develop into the department’s goals which develop into the manager’s goals … which develop into the worker’s goals. Employees will want the KSAs of their job description to align with what the organization is trying to perform. 
  1. Set profession related goals for yourself. I’m going to assume that the corporate has goals they would love an worker to perform. This doesn’t mean employees shouldn’t set a number of goals for themselves. I’m not suggesting that employees overwhelm themselves with extra activities but possibly there’s a book you’ve been intending to read or a podcast you’ve been wanting to take heed to. Make time for yourself. 
  1. Develop a fame for sharing good information online and in-person. I’m going to mix curation and networking here. Each are invaluable to your profession. Some days we’re capable of have more in-person conversations and other days, we spend more time online. Whenever you’re sharing content – whether it’s in-person or online, be certain it’s accurate and helpful. 

There are recent trends and technologies – like artificial intelligence – impacting business on a regular basis. That’s not going to vary. Employees must take into consideration how one can stay relevant not only within the context of AI but other developments like analytics, cybersecurity, and sustainability (simply to name a number of). 

I need to imagine that organizations are fascinated about how one can keep their employees relevant. Because staying relevant provides a competitive advantage. Nevertheless, I also imagine that employees should share within the responsibility of staying current. Consider staying relevant as a partnership that can profit each the worker and the organization.
