India skipper Rohit Sharma has said that a process is at all times in place to make sure that a bench strength is created when a bunch of players are already playing, and Indian cricket for the longer term is in very hands, backing the likes of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to take the team ahead.
Rohit said that the way in which his team made it undefeated through the Champions Trophy shows their passion and commitment and offers a superb indication for the longer term.
Rohit explained how the setup has been created to support the progress of young talent.
“That’s the whole point. You wish to create your bench strength when you’re playing. At any time when we had the chance within the last 4 or five years, we’ve at all times tried to provide opportunities to all these players,” Rohit said while talking to ICC.
“If you find yourself discussing which player to select, who to drop, who’s going to miss out on the opening eleven, that tells you there’s a lot depth on this team,” Rohit said.
On the white-ball front, the Indian team sit up for two ICC events in the subsequent two years, with a T20 World Cup at home early next 12 months and an ODI World Cup in 2027.
“I can surely say that Indian cricket for the longer term is in very, very protected hands, taking a look at how the players are coming up, how they need to take that responsibility, how much hunger is there,” Rohit said.
“The fervour, the talent, all of that’s there. It’s nearly now going on the market and doing it.” Rohit added.
As a result of ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness concerns and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee’s preference to groom Gill for some more time within the role of a deputy, Rohit stays the perfect candidate to proceed leading the team because it goes through a transition phase.
Ace India batter Virat Kohli, Rohit’s longtime teammate, put it after the Champions Trophy final that the side’s core is able to play for the subsequent eight years, but he must put Indian cricket in good hands as and when he decides to retire.
