Middleweight Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams (18-1, 12 KOs) won a surprisingly wide 12 round unanimous decision in a fight that gave the impression to be close enough to be a draw against second-tier fighter Patrice Volny (19-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday night of their headliner on the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Williams, 28, focused on using his volume punching style to outwork the larger, stronger, and far older 35-year-old Volny. The rounds were very close, making it unattainable to find out who was getting the higher of the motion. In the long run, the judges focused on Ammo’s strong finish, however the scores were out of whack for the way in which the fight played out.

Hearn’s Plan
After the fight, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said he wants to offer Ammo Williams a title shot before the tip of the yr. He didn’t say which champion, but on condition that Ammo is ranked highest with the WBA at #7, Hearn will goal champion Erislandy Lara for Williams to fight.
I don’t see Ammo beating Lara, WBC champion Carlos Adames and particularly not IBF/WBO champ Janibek Alimkhanuly. Those guys hit too hard, and have an excessive amount of talent for the still very green light-hitting Ammo Williams. He fights like he’s musclebound, and might’t generate power for some reason.
“That was by far one of the best win of his profession,” said promoter Eddie Hearn about Ammo Williams. “The middleweight division is type of dead now. I believe in 2025, it’s time for that man to fight for a world title.”
Edgar Berlanga Crushes Gonzalez-Ortiz
In the opposite notable fight on the cardboard, super middleweight or should I say cruiserweight, Edgar Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) destroyed Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-1-1, 16 KOs) in the primary round.
Berlanga was coming off his loss to Canelo Alvarez last September, and you may tell from his fleshy, obese physique that he’d been eating well from “the bag” that he got for that fight.
Berlanga was 193 lbs for that fight, but tonight, he looked even heavier, which gave the 35-year-old Gonzalez-Ortiz no likelihood of winning; not that he would ever stand a likelihood at any weight. This was a designed mismatch.
The heavily tattooed Berlanga dropped Gonzalez-Ortiz thrice with hard punches to the pinnacle. The referee stepped in and waved it off after the third knockdown. The time was at 2:31 of the primary. Gonzalez-Ortiz looked badly out of practice, showing a flabby midsection from being out of the ring for a solid ten years.
