And having watched Sancho’s latest quiet performance on the Emirates, former Chelsea centre-back Gallas thinks his former club should seriously consider that option.

‘That player has talent. He’s a talented player, everybody knows this, but we don’t know why he can’t perform and might’t show what he can do,’ Gallas said of Sancho on Stadium Astro.

‘At Dortmund, he was magnificent. At Manchester United it didn’t work well for him. He got here to Chelsea and at the start we saw that Sancho from Dortmund, but then he disappeared.

‘I don’t know what the issue is, but in the mean time he can’t stay at Chelsea because he has to do more.

‘Once you play within the Premier League you’ve gotten to play every game at the very best level. It’s demanding, but you’ll be able to’t just play well for just a few games after which relax.’

Asked specifically about Sancho’s performance against Arsenal, Gallas added: ‘Did you see him dribble past his left-back today? No. He did nothing.

‘He didn’t challenge his left-back opponent. He all the time gets the ball, does some skills, after which passes the ball back. We would like to see more, especially when you find yourself the winger.’

Maresca, meanwhile, was hopeful that the return of key players will get his side back to their best attacking best after the international break.

‘It’s an enormous difference for those who consider the three players with most goals for us are Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke,’ he said.

‘Not one among them was on the pitch today. For 2 of them, they’ve already been out an extended time, so it’s normal that offensively we struggle a bit of bit, even when – until today – we’re the second or the third best attacking team within the league.

‘Meaning in any case we’re doing well without those players but we could do higher with the players which can be injured in the mean time.’
