IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal Breaks Silence On Plans To Increase Teams In WPL

The Women’s Premier League has “grown phenomenally” within the last three years but there are not any immediate plans to extend the variety of teams from the prevailing five, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, who can be a component of the WPL committee, has said. The WPL committee headed by BCCI president Roger Binny. The Board had plans to extend the variety of teams after three seasons but it surely now desires to consolidate. “To further strengthen this tournament in the interim, we would like to consolidate before we take a call on further addition of any team. There are not any immediate plans (so as to add teams),” Dhumal told PTI.

Having said that, Dhumal is pleased with the expansion of the tournament.

“So, inside three editions, WPL has grown phenomenally when it comes to traction, for in-stadium attendance. All the printed numbers are very, very encouraging. And it has given latest impetus to women’s cricket worldwide.

“So, we hope this continues to grow. And this augurs thoroughly for not only the tournament, but women’s cricket basically,” he added.

WPL has not yet been played in home and away format, like it’s the case with the Indian Premier League. The BCCI combined smaller centres like Baroda and Lucknow with Mumbai and Bengaluru to host the newest edition that ended on March 15.

Mumbai Indians won their second title in three years beating Delhi Capitals in the ultimate in Mumbai.

The BCCI had mopped up Rs 4670 crore from the sale of 5 teams representing Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, UP and Gujarat.

The media rights were sold for Rs 951 crore, making it the second biggest women’s league on the planet before a ball being bowled.

The group turnout for majority of the games was decent this season. Though the predominant goal of the league is to advertise the ladies’s game in India and unearth more talent. The competition has loads of scope to enhance on that front.
