Ruben Amorim is using the mistaken tactics for the players he has, believes former Liverpool star Danny Murphy, after an ‘abject’ Manchester United performance in defeat to Newcastle.

The Red Devils’ nightmare season continued at St James’ Park on Sunday as they were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle, slipping to 14th within the Premier League table.

It was a good first half display from Amorim’s side, but they fell away after the break because the Magpies soared to victory.

The Manchester United boss identified mistakes from his players in the sport, with the likes of Noussair Mazraoui and Altay Bayindir producing costly errors, but Murphy feels the manager is responsible as well.

‘There are individual errors however it’s definitely not only that. I still think tactically they’re mistaken, with the players they’ve got,’ Murphy said on Match of the Day 2.

‘Their options up front are really limited and that’s all the way down to the manager, the tactical plan and the motivation of the players and the players he’s picking.’

Nonetheless, Murphy did accept that United’s focus could have been on facing Lyon within the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, saying: ‘There may be today, I couldn’t say a get out of jail card with the midweek coming up, because he did have a couple of on the bench who might normally start.

‘They’ve got to prioritise midweek because they’ll’t do anything within the Premier League. But that’s an abject performance from a Manchester United side, it truly is poor.’

The previous England midfielder did also aim some criticism on the players, who he feels usually are not able to being adaptable and making decisions during games.

‘The high line from Newcastle. United have gotten to go long from time to time. Play some percentages. Turn them round and get some runners,’ said Murphy. ‘It’s poor game management, individually from players inside the game.

‘It’s a giant topic recently, are players too robotic? Are they listening to the manager an excessive amount of? Make some decisions that influence the sport positively.’

Speaking out after the 14th defeat of the Premier League campaign for the Red Devils, Amorim said: ‘We did a variety of mistakes and so they were higher than us, stronger than us.

‘Suffering the second goal to start with of the second half hurt us so much after which we did mistakes throughout the game that helped Newcastle to win the sport.’

He suggested that errors are all the way down to the team, reasonably than individuals, adding: ‘It’s a team thing. We’re doing a variety of mistakes in certain games that give confidence to the opponent, give goals, after which it’s hard to deal with every thing.

‘We had the primary likelihood, we didn’t rating, [then] they’ve their likelihood, they rating. Then they took control of the sport. We scored to attract but then second half, we were suffering within the second play of the sport, it’s hard for our team and we did a variety of mistakes.’
