Luis Suarez was involved in yet one more biting controversy as he appeared to nibble at teammate Jordi Alba during Inter Miami’s latest win.

The previous Barcelona and Liverpool superstar is infamous for plenty of controversial incidents on the pitch, including multiple cases of biting opponents.

And he has made headlines again following Miami’s ill-tempered clash against LAFC within the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-final tie last week.

The incident occurred toward the tip of the match when Marlon Santos’ rash challenge on Lionel Messi led to a fracas between the 2 sides.

Suarez and Alba were among the many players to leap to the defence of their good friend and former Barcelona teammate, but as they joined the melee, the previous felt a hand touch his face.

Similar to old times, the Uruguay striker instinctively turned and bit the fingers… only to suddenly realise they belonged to Alba and stop.

The Spanish left-back seemed to be in considerable pain as he was dragged away by LAFC and former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, won the tie 3-2 on aggregate and now advance to the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup where they’ll face fellow MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps.

Luis Suarez’s previous biting controversies

For a lot of fans, the incident bought back memories of Suarez’s other biting controversies, the primary of which in 2010 when the then-Ajax star attacked PSV’s Otman Bakkal.

For that he was given a seven-game ban, followed by a 10-game ban for savagely biting Branislav Ivanovic on the arm during a Premier League clash between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2013.

Probably the most notable incident occurred on the 2014 World Cup when he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder, with FIFA slapping the Uruguayan with a four-month ban from football.

It stays to be seen whether he’ll face any disciplinary motion for the nibble on Alba.

Controversies aside, Suarez is taken into account among the best strikers of his generation, having scored 518 goals in 849 club games, in addition to a record 69 goals for his country.

The 38-year-old’s trophy haul includes five La Liga titles, the Champions League, 4 Copa del Reys, the League Cup and the 2011 Copa America.

In 2024, he joined Miami to reunite with Messi, Alba and Sergio Busquets and has continued to seek out the back of the online with ease, with 29 goals in 49 appearances to this point.
