A lady has died and one other is fighting for her life in hospital after a cryotherapy session in Paris.

What was meant to be a routine cryotherapy session at a wellness centre within the neighborhood of Popincourt, on the best bank of the River Seine, resulted in a tragedy on Monday evening.

An worker of the gym, who was in her late 20s, was pronounced dead on the scene, while a client, who’s in her 30s, was taken to hospital in critical condition.

A nitrogen leak from the cryochamber, where temperature drops to below -100°C, is known to have caused the poisoning, a source near the investigation said.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office said: ‘An investigation into the reason for death has been launched.’

Three individuals who were involved with the victims and provided first aid also received treatment.

As many as 150 people were inside the ability when the alleged poisoning happened.

The centre was evacuated as police and emergency services arrived on the scene.

It was not long after that a body covered with a white sheet was carried out and put right into a vehicle parked outside.

A member of the centre, Diego Brisset, arrived shortly after the incident at 6.20pm.

‘I used to be going to coach, like every evening, once I saw two colleagues from the gym who told me that it os was closed and (…) that there had been a death,’ the 26-year-old said.

Nitrogen is an odorless gas used for sports recovery during a cryotherapy
session.

An individual is immersed in tubs of ice water or, as is the case in some gyms, nitrogen chambers.

The cold is claimed to assist prevent or treat muscle soreness after exercise.
