The death toll after a cable automobile crashed in Italy has risen to 4 people.

One person remains to be missing after the incident at Monte Faito, about 45miles south-east of Naples.

The cable broke on the machine linking the town of Castellammare di Stabia to Mount Faito, 1.8miles (3km) apart.

All of those killed, in addition to the missing person, are tourists, the president of the region said.

The cable automobile had been over a steep drop when the cable snapped, and poor weather, including mist, prevented rapid access by rescue services.

‘4 dead bodies were found and a fifth injured person was rescued and brought to hospital,’ a spokesperson for the local fire service said on Telegram.

‘The cabin at the highest has crashed,’ Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of the EAV public transport company which runs the cable automobile service, wrote on Facebook, calling it ‘a tragedy’.

Several Italian media reports said one in all the cables supporting the cabin had snapped.

There have been 16 passengers in one other cable automobile rescued one-by-one with harnesses after their cabin stopped in midair near the foot of the mountain.

Video captured the moment one occupant was lowered out of the cable automobile and towards the bottom.
