The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis has died aged 88.

He led the Catholic Church for 12 years, having been elected in March 2013 following the historic resignation of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI.

Tributes are beginning to flood in the world over, with Scottish and Irish politicians honouring Francis.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the world had reacted with ‘profound sadness’ on the Pope’s passing on Easter Monday.

‘On behalf of the Government and the people of Ireland, I offer my heartfelt sympathies and my deepest condolences to all who mourn him, to His Eminence Cardinal Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, to his family and friends, and to the Catholic community worldwide that has lost an exceptional leader,’ Mr Martin said.

‘Pope Francis’ long and distinguished papacy was marked by his unwavering commitment to the principles of compassion, peace, and human dignity.’

Scottish First Minister John Swinney has described Pope Francis as ‘a voice for peace, tolerance and reconciliation’ as he paid tribute following the pontiff’s death aged 88.

‘It’s with deep sadness I heard the news this morning of the death of Pope Francis,’ Mr Swinney posted to X, formerly Twitter.

‘He was a voice for peace, tolerance and reconciliation in our society. He brought comfort, assurance and hope to many. May he Rest in Peace.’
