Dewald Brevis joins CSK as alternative for injured Gurjapneet Singh in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have pulled off a sensational mid-season signing by bringing in South African sensation Dewald Brevis for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. With the team struggling and major injuries plaguing their campaign, CSK’s management has pulled the trigger on a daring, youth-driven decision.

Who’s Dewald Brevis?

Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his uncanny resemblance in batting style to the nice AB de Villiers, Brevis has been on the radar since his U19 World Cup heroics. At just 21, he’s already shown sparks of brilliance that hint at superstardom. Despite the fact that Brevis had a base price of INR 75 Lakh within the previous auction, CSK shelled out a hefty INR 2.2 Crore for him now.

Unfortunately, Gurjapneet Singh, a promising Tamil Nadu pacer bought for a similar price on the auction, didn’t get to play a single game. His spot is now taken by Brevis on account of injury management and team needs.

Brevis has already played 81 T20 matches, boasting a near 145 strike rate—a stat that puts him within the elite tier of modern-day power hitters. He’s no stranger to IPL pressure. Brevis played 10 matches for MI, gaining invaluable experience and learning under Rohit Sharma and Co. He’s been lighting it up for the Titans in South Africa and recently dominated the SA20 league, proving that form is on his side.

Why This Move is a Masterstroke

From smashing 162 off 57 in junior-level cricket to ending with the best strike rate (184.17) within the recent SA20 tournament, Brevis is that guy. He’s not only hype—he delivers. The unorthodox shots, fearless hitting, and funky confidence on the pitch give fans flashbacks of vintage ABD. CSK has a knack for spotting future stars and grooming them. Brevis might just be their next big success story.

CSK’s middle-order has lacked firepower this season. Brevis is available in with exactly that—no fear, all fireworks. CSK’s aging core gets a jolt of young blood. Brevis brings energy, agility, and athleticism to a side that sorely needs it. With the team struggling to recover from the road, Brevis might be that X-factor player who turns tight games into wins.

CSK’s 2025 Season So Far

With just two wins in seven games, things weren’t looking too shiny for CSK. The injury to skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was an enormous blow. His alternative, Ayush Mhatre, a Mumbai talent, remains to be finding his feet in the large league. With Gaikwad out, the legendary MS Dhoni is back captaining the side.
