Fans are buzzing with excitement as Suriya’s much-awaited film Retro is all set to hit the massive screens on May 1. But did you recognize this romantic motion entertainer wasn’t initially meant for the Jai Bhim star? In a surprising twist, director Karthik Subbaraj has revealed that the story was initially written for none apart from Superstar Rajinikanth.
A Script Meant For Thalaivar
In a candid interview, Karthik Subbaraj addressed speculations that Retro was once intended for Thalapathy Vijay. The director revealed, “This story was not written for Thalapathy Vijay sir, as being speculated. I wrote this script keeping in mind Thalaivar. Initially, it was more within the motion zone to suit Thalaivar’s image.”
The storyline was initially loaded with mass motion elements to enhance Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life screen presence. But when Subbaraj pitched the thought to Suriya, the project took a brand new shape. The Jigarthanda director added, “After narrating it to Suriya sir, it was modified to a love story. Even Suriya sir asked me if I narrated the script to Rajinikanth sir.” And that is how Retro transformed from a full-blown motion to a romantic motion entertainer.

Retro describes the journey of an emotional man, Paarivel Kannan, in his quest to hitch up along with his long-lost love, Rukmini. This movie integrates romance and beautifully stylized motion against the backdrop of vintage aesthetics. Pooja Hegde, marking her debut with Suriya, plays the feminine lead. The movie is full of extraordinary talents, featuring Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Sujith Shankar, and Singampuli within the supporting solid.
