Conor Benn has admitted that he can be greater than joyful to face Ryan Garcia for a belt next.
Benn is flying out to Recent York City on Wednesday for Garcia’s bout with Rolando Romero on a stacked card that takes place in Times Square.
‘King Ry’ faces former WBA super lightweight world champion Romero, while Devin Haney will box former unified WBC and WBO super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez.
Heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson has even confirmed his attendance for a brand new role on the Recent York card.
Benn, 28, suffered a decent unanimous decision defeat to Chris Eubank Jr this past weekend and has been weighing up his options for his future within the squared circle.
Talking to iFL TV, ‘The Destroyer’ explained why a fight with Garcia might be an ideal option, if a rematch with Eubank Jr doesn’t come to fruition.
“I’m flying out to Recent York tomorrow to see ‘Queen Ryan,'” Benn said on Tuesday.
“So we’ll see…I imagine he’s campaigning at 147 [lbs], he’s got the WBA title fight if he wins this fight.
“No problem, I’d happily fight him for the WBA world title of course, there’s options.”
Garcia discussed fighting Benn in an interview with SunSport this week, saying: “I would not mind fighting Conor Benn, that might be a stunning fight for me. Obviously he had a war with Chris Eubank [Jr].
“I do not know in the event that they’re gonna do a rematch but when that is sensible to my team and everybody else, let’s run it. We are able to do it.”
The World Boxing Association confirmed last week that Garcia’s fight with Romero that headlines the Times Square show might be for its secondary strap.
The sanctioning body has two championships: a ‘regular’ and a ‘super’ titleholder.
Moreover, the WBA’s welterweight world champion, Jaron Ennis, who can also be the IBF king, was promoted to the ‘super’ champion status and mandated to defend his crown against No. 1 contender Shakhram Giyasov next.
Garcia might be elevated to WBA ‘Super’ champion if he wins this fight and either the IBF, WBC, or WBO belt, so it’s no surprise that Benn sees a bout with the American as a possible stepping stone to world title status.
Benn also confirmed that if his rematch with Eubank Jr doesn’t happen, then he would ‘love’ to fight WBC welterweight world champion Mario Barrios.
The Londoner headlined one in all the best British boxing spectacles of all time on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in front of nearly 70,000 fans and thousands and thousands worldwide.
He was fighting at middleweight for the primary time in his profession, having previously fought at welterweight and super-welterweight, while Eubank Jr, who was released from hospital on Monday, cut all the way down to 160 lbs.
Reports have suggested that Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, who organised the event on behalf of Ring Magazine, has already booked Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a September rematch between the pair.
Nevertheless, Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, believes his team have to ‘think very rigorously’ when deciding on his future.
“I feel they served you up one in all the best fights we have ever seen on this country,” he said.
“But for me, the danger was not for Chris Eubank Jr, the danger was for Conor Benn.
“And that is why we now have got to think very rigorously concerning the rematch, because I don’t need to see too many fights like that.
“It’s all thoroughly us sitting here and going, ‘Wow! What a fight! Let’s do it again,’ they’re the form of fights that may shorten your profession, and he’s got such an extended profession ahead of him.”
Garcia, meanwhile, is fighting for the primary time since serving a one-year suspension with the Recent York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).
He was banned from boxing after testing positive for clomifene in two separate drug tests taken around his April 2024 clash with Haney.
‘King Ry’ won that bout, however the result was overturned to a no-contest, and after his ban, he’s now back to face Romero
