Julien McKenzie: “@MelonbysDeadRat asks so that you can please explain 35 and over contracts. Could the Panthers use such a contract to pay Brad Marchant a big portion as a performance bonus that wouldn’t count against the cap until the 26-27 season, after they would have more cap room?”
Johnston: “Oh.”
McKenzie: “It’s loads of math.”
Johnston: “No, I’m just attempting to think. I just desired to make certain I’m giving the right answer. Yes, yes, they will. So that you’ve seen guys like Corey Perry or some others in, in recent times, mainly, they’ll have bonuses sprinkled through their contract. They could be games played bonuses, like at 20 games, you get this, 30, 40. They could be performance-related bonuses, like, if the team gets the playoffs or the primary round, you receives a commission this and that.
And all of those bonuses, the accounting for them, that the cash paid within the bonus itself, not the player’s base salary, could be deferred a 12 months on the cap.
And so the Panthers could conceivably do this. And I don’t know the precise limitations, if any, on how, like, what percentage needs to be paid within the bonus versus whatever, nevertheless it is a option to defer the pain. Call it, and it’s not that it’s pain, it’s just you’re attempting to be smart about, you understand, what you should do with those contracts.
And so, yeah, that’s, that’s something they might do. Now, I imagine they might need to sign them to a one-year deal to do it. That’s probably more of the fly within the ointment is, you understand, at this stage, I feel Brad Marchant is taking a look at a 3 to four-year contract, and I feel he’s going to have loads of bidders which can be willing to try this.
So, you understand, I’m not, I’m not saying this time in Florida is unquestionably up. I just think that there’s going to be, you understand, they produce other priorities. I mean, Sam Bennett‘s younger by a good bit, and having an awesome playoffs and as a part of the culture. Aaron Ekblad, as he said to my colleague, our colleague, Michael Russo, I’ve given my body to the Florida Panthers, but, you understand, he’s been with the team an extended, very long time. And there’s other players too, you understand.
I just, I don’t know in the event that they’re going to find a way to make even with the type of contract you’re saying. I feel it’s unlikely they keep Marchand, nevertheless it’s that the door isn’t closed. It’s not like he doesn’t adore it there. It’s just it truly is going to return all the way down to just, unfortunately, cold, hard business, I feel.
You already know, he’s, he’s at a stage where he’s seeking to they’ll make pretty good money and, and I feel the market goes to have it on the market for him, and possibly on guaranteed contracts which can be lasting three years or 4 years. That’s what I’d be in search of.
