Skipper Thomas Rew’s good hundred helped England bag a narrow one-wicket win against India within the second Youth ODI, levelling the five-match series at 1-1 on Monday in Northampton.

After winning the primary game by six wickets at Hove on June 27, India posted 290 in 49 overs when asked to bat first. England chased down the goal with three deliveries to spare, ending at 291/9 in the ultimate over.

Medium-pacer RS Ambrish took 4 wickets for 80 runs from his 10 overs, raising hopes of an Indian victory over England. The last English pair of Sebastian Morgan and Alex French survived the ultimate overs, bagging the win against India.

England’s run chase began shakily, with opener Ben Dawkins dismissed within the second over with only seven runs on the board. They then slumped to 46/2 and 47/3 by the twelfth over, with Ambrish taking the wickets of Ben Mayes and Isaac Mohammed.

Rew and Rocky Flintoff then rebuilt the innings with a 123-run stand for the fourth wicket, before the latter was dismissed by Kanishk Chouhan within the thirty third over.

Rew, who smacked 16 boundaries and 6 sixes in his masterful knock, fell within the fortieth over to Henil Patel, sparking a collapse that saw England reduced to 254/8 by the forty sixth over.

With 20 runs required from three overs and 12 from two, England had just two wickets left. Alex Green was dismissed on the primary delivery of the forty ninth over, becoming Ambrish’s third victim.

England required seven runs from the last over with the last duo on the crease.

Morgan smacked a boundary off the third delivery of the ultimate over, bowled by Yudhajit Guha, to bag the victory over England.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, India recovered from the early lack of opener and skipper Ayush Mhatre for a duck on the primary ball. Contributions from Vaibhav Suryavanshi (45), Vihaan Malhotra (49), Rahul Kumar (47), Kanishk Chouhan (45) and Abhigyan Kundu (32) took them to 290 in 49 overs.

Suryavanshi was among the many runs again, having scored 48 in India’s comprehensive victory over England.

For England, AM French was the standout bowler with figures of 4/71 from his 10 overs, while Jack Home (3/63) and Alex Green (3/50) took wickets as well. The house team conceded 32 extras, including 26 wides.

Temporary scores:

India U-19: 290 all out in 49 overs (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 45, Vihaan Malhotra 49, Rahul Kumar 47, Kanishk Chouhan 45; AM French 4/71, Jack Home 3/63, Alex Green 3/50).

England U-19: 291 for 9 in 49.3 overs (Thomas Rew 131, Rocky Flintoff 39; RS Ambrish 4/80).
