With uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation within the second Test against England at Edgbaston, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has endorsed Akash Deep as the perfect substitute.

India is keen on managing Bumrah’s workload across the five-match series, and Pathan believes that Akash Deep’s bowling style could possibly be effective in English conditions.

“If Bumrah isn’t there, then who should come into the side in his place? Akash Deep, from what’s been seen within the nets, appears to be moving into his rhythm. I feel that he’s the Shami mould style of bowler,” Pathan was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

India’s bowlers, apart from Bumrah, struggled in the primary Test at Headingley. Despite twin centuries from Rishabh Pant and first-innings a whole bunch from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, England chased down 371 to win by five wickets.

Pathan further explained why Akash Deep could make a difference, highlighting his concentrate on seam and swing slightly than hitting the deck like Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna.

“His straight seam deliveries can trouble the England batters, especially in the case of late movement. Should you are going aggressive, this could possibly be an issue. We’ll come to Arshdeep, but I believe if Bumrah isn’t playing, then it needs to be Akash Deep who should are available his place,” he added.

Will Bumrah Actually Play?

Meanwhile, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate expressed confidence that the team could perform well even when Bumrah is rested.

“It’s, but we also feel we are able to go 1-1 or keep the rating at 1-0 without Jasprit. Again, that’s putting the eggs within the back end of the series. We’re going to want him at some stage as well. You’ve got to determine once you’re going to play your strongest suit,” ten Doeschate said, indicating that the choice on Bumrah’s inclusion can be made on match day.
