England legend Stuart Broad was impressed by India Test captain Shubman Gill, who remained composed and showed patience despite his team struggling against England’s strong pace attack on the primary day of the second Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
Gill relieved the pressure on India and maintained a gradual run flow along with his solid batting technique. He struck a half-volley down the bottom for a 4 to stylishly bring up his fifty.
Broad admired Gill’s batting skills and his excellent form but didn’t hesitate to praise the 25-year-old, who’s proving to be a captain that players would need to play for.
“It’s been very patient from Shubman Gill up to now, and he’s got the look about him that he’s here for the day. A really calm nature, he looks just like the type of captain you’d prefer to play for. Doesn’t get too ruffled,” Broad said on Sky Sports.
Even after reaching the 50-run mark, the 25-year-old continued to manage the play with patience, testing England’s inexperienced bowling attack. He swept part-time spinner Joe Root behind square for a 4 after which hit the ball to finish a memorable hundred in Birmingham off 199 deliveries.
Gill combined caution with aggression to craft one other good innings.
“Wonderful. Test match innings. Patient Test match innings from Shubman Gill. He’s worked extremely hard for his second century as captain in his second successive Test. He’s remained extremely calm throughout, and his team appreciate each run he’s carved out up to now,” Broad said.
Gill displayed his exceptional form in the primary innings of the series opener. He continued to accumulate runs steadily, repaying the management’s trust by scoring his maiden Test century outside Asia in 140 balls, with 14 fours.
Gill now has scored seven centuries in his Test profession up to now.
