Scarlett Johansson Just Took the Box Office Crown

Scarlett Johansson just dethroned two of Hollywood’s biggest box office legends, and he or she did it in true blockbuster fashion.

The 40-year-old actress soared past her Marvel co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. over the Fourth of July weekend, officially becoming the highest-grossing lead actor ever, because of the huge success of her latest film, “Jurassic World: Rebirth.”

The seventh installment within the “Jurassic Park” franchise opened with a prehistoric roar, bringing in a jaw-dropping $147.3 million domestically since its debut last Wednesday and an enormous $318.3 million worldwide.

With that, Johansson’s global profession total for leading roles now stands at $14.61 billion, narrowly edging out Jackson’s $14.60 billion and Downey Jr.’s $14.3 billion, in response to The Numbers.

But here’s the kicker. Johansson achieved this feat in only 36 movies, in comparison with Jackson’s 71 and Downey’s 45. That is not only impressive, it’s record-shattering.

In the case of average box office pull, Scarlett is even further ahead. Her movies average a worldwide haul of $405.9 million each, far ahead of Downey Jr.’s $318.1 million and Jackson’s $205.7 million. This win also comes on the heels of Johansson opening up about fighting her way out of being typecast as a “sex symbol” early in her profession.

She’s not only breaking molds. She’s breaking records.

While Johansson now reigns globally, Jackson still holds the domestic crown, with $5.8 billion earned on U.S. soil. Downey Jr. trails barely behind with $5.47 billion, while Johansson is not far off at $5.41 billion.

It is also price noting that not all box office numbers are counted equally. Downey Jr.’s “Oppenheimer,” which earned nearly a billion worldwide, doesn’t count toward his total since he had a supporting role.

And yes, those Marvel blockbusters do count. Ensemble movies like “Avengers: Endgame” and “Infinity War” are factored into the tally for all three stars because they’re all considered to have leading roles.

With Downey Jr. set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reportedly as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” there is a likelihood he could snatch the crown back within the years to come back.

Scarlett Johansson is not just breaking box office records. She’s also stealing hearts behind the scenes.

While filming “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” the actress organized a special mid-production dinner in Malta that brought the solid, crew, partners, and even kids together for a rare and unforgettable moment of connection.

Jonathan Bailey, who stars alongside Johansson in the latest dino-sized blockbuster, shared the sweet memory with PEOPLE, revealing that the 40-year-old actress “brought everyone together” during filming overseas.

“Everyone’s family was there at the identical time,” he said. “We were in a square in Valletta, and it was just really special.”

Johansson, a mom of two, 10-year-old Rose and 3-year-old Cosmo, said she loved seeing the solid’s children playing freely within the historic square.

“It was beautiful, and it was so nice to see everybody’s children playing within the square. All of the partners were there, and it was an exquisite celebration of what we were accomplishing,” she shared. “It was form of the halfway point. It was so nice.”

The intimate moment got here during an intense global shoot that spanned Malta, Thailand, and Recent York City. But Johansson, in response to Bailey, brought energy, warmth, and leadership to the set, even once they were literally running from CGI dinosaurs.

“She led the film with such incredible energy, and that is on and off camera,” he added. “It was so apparent in a short time that it was going to be a knockout summer.”

Johansson, a self-proclaimed “Jurassic” superfan, said filming got here with its challenges, including physically demanding conditions and wild weather.

“All of us laughed loads. We were thrown into such extraordinary circumstances physically, it was just insane,” she recalled.

Now, she hopes this recent installment captures the identical magic she felt when she first watched Jurassic Park as a child.

“As an enormous fan of the flicks, I’m just excited for Jurassic nerds to see it… I hope there are other 10-year-olds which have the identical experience I did, just being completely carried away for 2 hours. It makes you dream.”
