An elderly British tourist was dragged and mugged to the ground in a horrific incident in Majorca.

The frail 85-year-old was crept up on from behind before his bag containing a wallet was snatched by the criminal.

Footage of the incident shows the thief chasing his victim before pouncing.

After snatching the bag, he’s shown fleeing the scene.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning within the town of Cala Millor on the Balearic Islands’ east coast.

Cops were eventually in a position to discover and locate the thief, who was recognised by the victim.

Son Servera council said in a press release on Friday: ‘We strongly condemn the unlucky events that occurred yesterday morning within the centre of Cala Millor, through which a young man robbed and assaulted an elderly person with the target of stealing his belongings.

‘Due to a special operation which took place the entire of yesterday evening, the perpetrator was situated and arrested, and was transferred to the police department, to be brought before the judicial service.

‘From the council we wish to convey a message of reassurance to all our residents. We proceed to work intensely to ensure the safety of our municipality.

‘We stand with the general public and can spare no effort to make Cala Millor a secure place for everybody.’

Tourists, particularly those visiting popular holiday spots including Majorca, Ibiza and the Costa del Sol, are advised to maintain all their valuables out of sight and only carry the money they need.

Suggestions for staying secure while abroad

Never keep valuables in your back pocket. Be sure they’re out of sight from pickpockets and only carry what you would like.

Leave expensive items in a hotel secure. Only take the money and cards you would like for the day.

Use only licensed taxis, signposted at official ranks or ask your hotel reception to call one.

Avoid walking home alone, especially at night and in low lit areas.

Should you are the victim of crime, report it to the local police immediately.

Within the event of a security incident, follow the recommendation and instruction of the staff or local authorities.
