Iggy Azalea Speaks On “Blaccent” Backlash And Race Controversy
Iggy found herself in the new seat at the height of her profession when people accused her of using a “blaccent” in her music to fuel her success. In her ABC interview, she confronted the race-related debates head-on. “I feel it was quite a bit,” she admitted, reflecting on the chaos.
“I said on reflection that I said as I got older where I’m like, ‘Hmm, that’s a horrible f****** take that you just had, however it was just a foul perfect storm.’”
At 24, the ‘Black Widow’ artist says she was navigating heated cultural conversations with a “limited view of America or culture,” which she now sees as a misstep. Looking back, Iggy also expressed regret over how she handled the heavy criticism she received. “I feel sometimes I just regret having an opinion in any respect, since it wasn’t necessarily my place to have an opinion,” she shared. Iggy Talks Music Industry “Ghosting” And Retirement
Per the ABC report, by 2019, Iggy’s profession took a pointy turn when the music industry began giving her the cold shoulder. “I feel the toughest part about it was seeing how the opposite artists would distance themselves from me publicly, that I used to be only welcomed in secret,” she revealed. The isolation stung, and it played a giant role in her decision to retire in 2023. Iggy got emotional talking in regards to the toll of the industry’s politics, saying, “I used to be just uninterested in it.”
Now, stepping away from music, does she miss it? “Yeah, in fact there are parts of music that I miss,” Iggy confessed. “Sometimes, I’ll have the itch and be like, ‘I want to get within the studio.’” However the grind of promotion, live shows, and industry drama? She’s over it. More importantly, Iggy’s protecting her peace for her son, Onyx.
“I don’t need to be a slave to that cycle… It’s one thing to sacrifice those things up when it’s just you. But I’d even be signing my son as much as sacrifice his life,” she explained.
Iggy Recently Dragged Her Ex Over His Alleged Absence from Son Onyx’s Life
Back in January, Iggy hopped on a Twitch livestream with Amouranth and aired out Playboi Carti’s absence from their 4-year-old son, Onyx’s life. When a fan asked her to nudge Carti about his delayed album I Am Music, Iggy didn’t hold back. “I don’t speak to him, my love. We haven’t heard from that man in over like, six months. We don’t know where he’s. Don’t know, haven’t any association,” she said, keeping all of it the way in which real. Iggy, who’s been open about being a single mom, previously shared on the ‘Dinner’s On Me’ podcast that she’s “very much the one parent” with no co-parenting in sight, per Vibe.
