World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah took to Instagram stories on Sunday (August 24) to pay a heartfelt tribute to Cheteshwar Pujara. 37-year-old Pujara announced his retirement from Indian cricket on Sunday morning. The precise-handed batter from Saurashtra took to X to share a post via which he confirmed the news.
Pujara played 103 Tests for India from 2010 to 2023 and scored 7195 runs with the assistance of 19 centuries. He played a giant role in India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia under Virat Kohli’s leadership in 2018-19 and on the other hand in 2020-21 under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy.
Bumrah, who shared a dressing room with Pujara on multiple tours, shared an image of Pujara and captioned, “Cricket will miss you Pujji bhai. Wish you success in your next chapter.”
Earlier within the day, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri, amongst others, also praised Pujara’s contributions to Indian cricket.
While Gambhir tweeted, “He stood tall when the storm raged, he fought when hope was fading. Congratulations Pujji,” Tendulkar wrote, “Pujara, it was at all times reassuring to see you walk out at No. 3. You brought calm, courage, and a deep love for Test cricket each time you played. Your solid technique, patience, and composure under pressure have been a pillar for the team. Out of many, the 2018 series win in Australia stands out, it wouldn’t have been possible without your incredible resilience and match-winning runs. Congratulations on an exquisite profession. Good luck for the subsequent chapter. Enjoy your second innings!”

Former India head coach Shastri hailed Pujara as an actual warrior and stated, “An actual warrior. He was instrumental in my stint as coach for India being the No1 side for five years on the trot and the two back to back series wins in Australia where he was simply good. Well done Puji . God bless. @cheteshwar1.”
