Ubisoft has been relatively quiet throughout Gamescom 2025, but the corporate finally announced The Division 2: Survivors today. Described as an “updated tackle the survival extraction experience” for The Division 2, the project is currently in early development. It’s led by creative director Magnus Jansén, who has been with the franchise because the early days of The Division. Unfortunately, that’s all the knowledge the team shared in regards to the project.
“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby because it is ours, and we try for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a spotlight as we construct the brand new experience, and we will likely be closely involving you as we move forward on the event journey,” said Julian Gerighty, executive producer.
While the extraction shooter genre has taken on a lifetime of its own, 2016’s The Division planted the seeds for that form of gameplay. The Dark Zone was a PvP zone that required players to extract their loot, a process that took time and notified other players that an extraction was happening. Players could engage each other and steal loot before it was extracted. Back then, it was some of the intense experiences we had as a bunch. Naturally, developers took that concept and evolved it into the extraction shooter genre we all know today.
Ubisoft also provided a small update on The Division Resurgence, a free-to-play mobile game announced in 2022. Going down in Manhattan a number of months after the top of The Division, the mobile game is designed to bridge the narrative gap between The Division and The Division 2. More test phases are planned for September, starting with a closed test on iOS and Android to assemble additional feedback and insights.
