Sollecito and Knox were charged with murder and sexual assault in November 2007. While Sollecito and Knox at all times maintained their innocence, there have been contradictions of their alibis. For instance, Sollecito said he was watching cartoons on his computer at his own apartment on the night of the murder, though his PC records couldn’t confirm his claim.

Knox told investigators that she was at Sollecito’s apartment on the night of Kercher’s murder, though Sollecito admitted he couldn’t be certain they were together all night. What Happened in Raffaele Sollecito’s Trials?

Sollecito and Knox were convicted twice of Kercher’s murder under controversial circumstances. The pair were initially found guilty following a highly-publicized trial in 2009, just for an appeal to overturn the decision two years later. (Knox had been serving a 26-year sentence, while Sollecito was given 25 years behind bars.)

The Italian Supreme Court took up the case in 2013 and ruled to overturn the appeals and order a brand new trial to happen. The next 12 months, Sollecito and Knox were convicted a second time and ordered back to prison, in line with NPR.

Knox returned to the U.S. after her first successful appeal in 2011 and, consequently, was tried in absentia. Sollecito remained in Italy and was briefly sent back to prison following the second conviction.

When Sollecito appealed the trial result once more, the Italian Supreme Court took up the case for a second time and ruled to overturn Sollecito’s second conviction, formally exonerating him in March 2015. The high court ruled that Sollecito and Knox could never again face criminal prosecution in connection to Kercher’s death.

Sollecito spoke to NBC News on the time in regards to the end of his and Knox’s long, legal nightmare.

“Everybody was pushing me… we were in type of a frenzy… a chaos of happiness,” he remembered. “It was great, it was really great … It looks like the air is more fresh … the air of freedom feels very nice, it smells nice!”

Why Did Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox Split?

Knox and Sollecito’s fates were tied together long after their romantic relationship ended.

Chatting with Cooper in 2012, Sollecito recalled keeping in close contact with Knox for 4 years after they were sent to separate prisons in 2009. He admitted his family encouraged him to talk out against Knox to be able to secure a lesser sentence.

“After I have a look at her I get stuck somewhat bit, I used to be nervous,’ he told Katie Couric in a 2012 interview. “I still had the psychological wounds of this nightmare that passed in prison. Her image brought up the image of the nightmare.”

He went on, “After she hugged me, I realised that Amanda is the Amanda that I dated for that week. She’s not the Amanda that was ‘the ghost Amanda’ during those 4 years.”

What Is Raffaele Sollecito’s Life Like Now?

Each Knox and Sollecito moved on with their lives at the same time as the appeals and retrial process took place within the 2010s. Knox married creator Christopher Robinson in February 2020 and so they now share two children.

Sollecito pursued a profession as a software engineer and moved to Milan to run his own business. He later announced his engagement to his girlfriend Andreea Mihaela Burtea, though it is just not clear in the event that they are still together.

Sollecito wrote a memoir in 2012 called Honor Sure: My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox, wherein he reflected on retreating from the general public eye after his first successful appeal.
