Danny Simpson believes Benjamin Sesko needs an experienced striker to assist mentor him – and the previous Manchester United defender has the proper candidate.

United signed Sesko from RB Leipzig for £74million as they sought to refresh their attacking options, having scored only 44 goals within the Premier League last season.

The Slovenian international has taken time to regulate to his recent surroundings, but he did rating in back-to-back games prior to the international break.

Nevertheless, having let Rasmus Hojlund depart for Napoli, United have essentially pinned their hopes on Sesko being their answer up front, with fellow summer signings Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha not natural strikers and Joshua Zirkzee seemingly out of favour under Amorim.

Paul Scholes recently blasted United’s decision to rely solely on Sesko, joking: ‘It’s like Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) coming over to us when he was 22 and we had no other centre-forward and he was the one playing every week. You’d kill him!’

‘I do imagine they need to have two strikers, it just depends whether one’s a bit more senior, just to present him that mentoring role. That’s something I might definitely have a look at.’

And Simpson believes that England international Ivan Toney could fit the bill if the previous Brentford striker is seeking to return to the Premier League.

Toney has scored a powerful 26 goals in 34 Saudi Pro League games for Al-Ahli, but has seen his World Cup hopes fade since his £40m move, having only featured in one among Thomas Tuchel’s squads for the reason that German’s arrival.

‘He’s obviously got the temperament and he knows the league,’ Simpson said of the 29-year-old.

‘I actually think as well, because he’s been out in Saudi Arabia, he would actually now come back to possibly play a distinct role where you might be a rotation option.

‘You’re going to get quite a lot of games, but you may start, you may come off the bench. So I believe that’s something, if I were him, you possibly can’t turn that down.

‘Coming to the club like Man United and playing a distinct type of role, since you’ve been in Saudi Arabia – that may give him a likelihood to get with England in the summertime, because we’re still short of assorted strikers.

‘So yeah, something might brew there. I do know Ivan – I’ve not spoken to him about it, but I just think that’s an excellent option.’
