Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a motivating refer to the West Indies players following their spirited display within the second Test in Delhi. He told them they’ve the potential to encourage the subsequent generation of cricketers, emphasizing that their intent and purpose on the sector holds great value.
After suffering an innings defeat within the series opener in Ahmedabad, the visitors continued to struggle in each batting and bowling early within the second Test. But after India enforced the follow-on, the West Indies showed character with a gritty batting effort. John Campbell and Shai Hope led the fightback with resilient centuries, making the Indian bowlers work hard despite failing to set a difficult goal.
Post-match, Gautam Gambhir visited the West Indies dressing room to understand their determination. In a video shared by the BCCI, he said:
“See, many teams they play because they love the sport. There are only a few teams, someone like a West Indies, who has a purpose to play this game. Purpose is all the time more vital than love. The aim, once I have a look at you guys, I feel you guys can encourage the subsequent generation of West Indies cricket.”
“I feel the way in which you played within the second innings of this Test match might be the template which actually can take West Indies cricket forward. The way in which you guys fought from No.1 to No. 11. In a team sport, a very powerful thing is that each contribution must be appreciated. It’s very easy sometimes to speak about tons of, fifers,” he added.
“Big performances grab headlines, however it’s the small contributions that construct a team” – Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir emphasized the importance of appreciating even the smaller contributions inside the dressing room, noting that major performances naturally receive the highlight.
“The fellows who’re scoring 100s and taking fifers, they don’t need support from the coaches or staff. I feel it’s the small contributions that makes a team, not the massive contributions. Big contribution only makes headlines. If you must be a very good team, I feel that’s something vital, that’s what we try to do in our dressing room as well, trying to provide enough appreciation to small contributions.”
