For context, a clip from Bishop Winans’ “Day of Giving” fundraiser on Oct. 19 began making rounds on social media, and chile, it ruffled some feathers. Through the event, Winans asked churchgoers to donate $1,000 and lift one other $1,000 to assist finish a sanctuary in Detroit. He told anyone giving $2,000 or more to return to the front first. But when Roberta McCoy got here up with lower than $2K — offering $1K plus $235, Marvin didn’t hesitate to correct her, saying, “Now, that’s only $1200. Y’all not listening to what I’m saying. If you will have $1000 plus $1000.” To which Roberta replied, “Well, I’m going to work on the opposite $800.” Marvin then responded with, “Well, that ain’t what I asked you to do.”
Following the outrage over Bishop Marvin Winans’ comment, he spoke exclusively with WXYZ Detroit to share his side. He told the outlet that he was simply calling people up and telling them to listen.
“I used to be calling since the whole church was giving, and it was our day of giving, and the entire church was coming, and we didn’t want people standing, the moms and all of that, so I used to be calling them by increments,” Marvin Winans explained.

“He absolutely didn’t rebuke me. Now there’s a difference. There was a correction because let me clearly state that pastor gave instruction on the lines to enter,” Roberta said.

Amid the entire reactions to Bishop Marvin Winans’ video, gospel singer Fred Hammond jumped in along with his thoughts. He appeared to be riding for Winans, making it clear he’s sticking beside him. Fred dropped the complete video of Bishop Winans on his Instagram and called out anyone who only showed the clip of him talking to Roberta. He also said that each organization raises money, and he didn’t see anything mistaken with the church searching for its own.
“It’s nothing mistaken with the church taking good care of its own.
