Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has lauded Team India women’s cricketer Renuka Singh Thakur for her stellar performance within the Women’s World Cup. The Chief Minister spoke with Renuka, who hails from Rohru in Shimla, on Monday and announced a financial reward of Rs 1 crore from the federal government in recognition of her achievements.
During their conversation, CM Sukhu praised Renuka’s bowling, which he observed had exerted considerable pressure on the South African team. He commended her despite noticing the pressure she was under, stating that her performance had made the state proud.
He also shared that this was the primary women’s cricket match he had watched, and he was particularly impressed by her efforts in the course of the semifinals and finals.
Renuka’s mother, Sunita, recounted her daughter’s struggles, highlighting that Renuka’s initial salary was merely Rs 1,500, and he or she even needed to borrow money to purchase cricket shoes value Rs 15,000.
In the course of the call, although Renuka’s voice was not audible, it seemed she requested a government job, to which the CM responded affirmatively.
The Chief Minister replied, “Yes… I’ll ensure that to do it. You’ve met me before, and now I’ll see what I can do about your job as well. It’s best to come and meet me. Be joyful first—I feel you’ve just woken up, and that’s a really joyful thing. Thanks.”
Chatting with News18, Sunita said that the federal government should provide her daughter with a stable job.
Renuka Thakur, from Parsa village in Shimla’s Rohru tehsil, has upheld her father’s dream of seeing a member of the family reach cricket, a vision initially intended for her brother.
Renuka just isn’t the primary from Himachal Pradesh to make it to Team India; Sushma Verma, Tunja Kanwar, and Harleen Deol have also represented the state, although Harleen originally hails from elsewhere but plays for Himachal.
