The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated South Africa by 7 runs within the 2024 T20 World Cup final played at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29.

Rohit Sharma led India to their second ICC T20 World Cup title win in June 2024. Under Rohit’s leadership, India defeated South Africa by seven runs at Kensington Oval in Barbados to lift the T20 World Cup title for the second time in 17 years. Rohit was the member of the Indian team once they won the inaugural edition under MS Dhoni’s leadership in 2007, and 17 years later, he led the side to their second title win. Rohit, who announced his retirement from T20Is after India’s 7-run win within the summit clash, opened up in regards to the team’s title win and said it was a miracle.

“With that final (2023 ODI World Cup) in Ahmedabad, God has been very kind, and we went on to win the finals. From the position we were in, and to go on and win that final after that, it was truly a miracle, after which 8 months later, India go on to win one other ICC trophy. So I’m pretty blissful with that,” Rohit said through the ICC event in Mumbai on Tuesday.

In the ultimate of the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa needed 30 runs to win from 30 balls, but they failed to attain the target and went on to lose the fixture by 7 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets each for the Indian team in that fixture, and three South African batters were sent back to the pavilion by Hardik Pandya.

Through the T20 World Cup 2025 schedule reveal event in Mumbai, Rohit was asked to select his two finalists for the subsequent yr’s tournament in India and Sri Lanka. Rohit said that he wants India to feature in the ultimate and successfully defend their title.

“Obviously I would like India to be within the finals. Can’t really put my fingers on one other team and say this and that. India playing the ultimate against any team and India coming out on top is what I might like to see, and I’m pretty sure… I don’t know… what the others want. But I don’t care in regards to the opposition, to be honest. I prefer India to be there, after which let’s see what happens,” Rohit said.
