No, not that Adolf Hitler. That is Adolf Hitler Uunona, a 59-year-old politician who won his seat yet again in a landslide election.
Despite his namesake, Hitler is a extremely popular politician in his small town with 5,000 residents, working on anti-apartheid efforts.
He previously said he wasn’t aware of his name’s origins, adding: ‘It doesn’t mean I even have Adolf Hitler’s character or resemble that of Adolf Hitler of Germany.’
After his recent win, he said he desires to be referred to by his other surname, Uunona.
‘My name isn’t Adolf Hitler. I’m Adolf Uunona. Previously, I even have been called Adolf Hitler, they usually have tried to associate me with someone I don’t even know,’ he told BILD.
‘My wife calls me Adolf.’
Though he goes by the name Adolf Uunona day by day, he says it’s too late to vary his full legal name.
He said his father had named him after the Nazi leader, but that ‘he probably didn’t understand what Adolf Hitler stood for’.
Mr Uunona said he saw it ‘as a very normal name’ as a baby but only later realised the horrors committed by his namesake as he grew up.
Germanic names are common in Namibia, which was a part of a German territory called German South West Africa from 1884 to 1915.
