On This Day In 2011: Following the footsteps of his idol and batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag became the second man on the planet to script a double century in One-Day Internationals on December 8, 2011. The swashbuckling opener, who had envied the incredible landmark ever since Tendulkar hammered the South Africans in Gwalior for his 200* in February 2010, took lower than 18 months to duplicate the feat in scintillating fashion.
Staying back in India for the ODI series versus the West Indies when multiple senior pros, including Tendulkar, had gone early for the following Test series in Australia, Sehwag achieved his dream milestone. He blazed a remarkable 219 off just 149 deliveries, including 25 fours and seven sixes, within the fourth ODI of the five-match series in Indore.

Sehwag, renowned for his destruction of length and field settings, played one in every of his most brutal and dominant innings against the Calypso Kings. Batting in his true elements, he bossed the opposition from the word go and unleashed a variety of imposing strokes. The innings reinforced Sehwag’s status as the sport’s most fearsome batter. When the Nawab of Najafgarh hit the flow, no bowler on this planet could stop him.
It was evident throughout this innings on the Holkar Stadium. Sehwag hit his shots everywhere in the park, going at a strike-rate of 146.97. He shared a marvellous opening stand with Gautam Gambhir (67) and one other exceptional partnership with No.3 Suresh Raina (55). Sehwag kept playing shots whilst those two departed in an innings that will’ve taken plenty of physical toll.
Despite fatigue, he reached the 200-mark by smashing all-rounder Andre Russell for a boundary within the forty fourth over and fell on 219 while attempting one other big hit against Kieron Pollard. Sehwag’s innings gave the then-young turks Rohit Sharma (27) and Virat Kohli (23*) a masterclass on powerhitting.
The tremendous knock pushed India to a mammoth 418/5 of their 50 overs before the Caribbean men crumbled under pressure and will only muster 265 all out in response. The destructive beast that Sehwag was he amassed 8,273 runs over 251 ODIs at a strike rate of 104.33 in his impactful profession.
