The Next Tomb Raider Will Be Revealed At The Game Awards

The legendary action-adventure series Tomb Raider is about to return during Thursday’s The Game Awards ceremony. This was initially revealed within the Fortnite map portal (because that is how we’re doing game announcements now) before being posted to social media by Geoff Keighley, founder and host of The Game Awards.

“Lara Croft returns at The Game Awards,” his post reads. “As just revealed in our The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite map portal, tune in on Thursday night for a have a look at the longer term of one in all gaming’s most iconic franchises. That is one you will not need to miss.”

It is a bizarre reveal for one in all the world’s most famous game series, which still maintains pop-cultural relevance despite the lenghty periods of hibernation the series has experienced several times since its debut in 1996.

The Ever-Changing Ownership of Tomb Raider

The mental property rights of Tomb Raider have modified hands quite a few times, with Embracer Group’s subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises currently possessing these rights. Amazon Games has also been linked to an upcoming Tomb Raider game, under the stewardship of Embracer.

Tomb Raider was originally owned by Eidos Interactive, which published the unique run of games developed by Core Design between 1996 and 2003. After a three-year hiatus, the series was rebooted by Crystal Dynamics in 2006 with the Legend Trilogy. A well-regarded co-op spin-off, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, was released in 2010, before the series was once more rebooted with 2013’s Tomb Raider.

The following trilogy was published by Square Enix, which had acquired Eidos and Crystal Dynamics within the interim. Following the 2018 release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the series once more went on hiatus. Embracer then acquired several assets from Square Enix, including Eidos and Crystal Dynamics.

Now, Tomb Raider is about to return. Crystal Dynamics appears to be working with Amazon Games on yet one more reboot, which is probably going what we’ll see at The Game Awards. It has been eight years for the reason that release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the general public perception of Embracer Group is poor to say the least, but Crystal Dynamics has an excellent track record.

We’ll just should wait and see what the studio has cooked up for us at The Game Awards.
