Days before the IPL mini-auction, the BCCI on Tuesday announced a final list of 350 players, which was later updated to 359, that can go under the hammer on December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Initially, 1390 players registered for the auction, but after discussion with the ten franchises, it was trimmed before being made public.

The list comprises 246 Indian and 113 overseas players.

Of the 350, 244 are uncapped, including India all-rounder Vijay Shankar.

Shankar played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India between March 2018 and June 2019, including on the ICC World Cup in England. So, why has he registered himself as an uncapped Indian?

It has to do with a rule IPL introduced ahead of the mega-auction last 12 months, per which an Indian player who has not played international cricket for the last five calendar years preceding an auction will grow to be uncapped.

“A capped Indian player will grow to be uncapped if the player has, within the last five calendar years preceding the 12 months during which the relevant Season is held, not played within the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or doesn’t have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will likely be applicable for Indian Players only,” states the rule.

For the reason that 34-year-old Shankar’s last appearance for India was in June 2019, he has, for the upcoming IPL auction, grow to be an uncapped Indian.
