Doom Co-Creator John Romero Reveals His Cancelled Game Is Alive And Well

Back in July, when Microsoft went on a spree of cancelling projects and shutting down studios, John Romero’s Romero Games revealed that it had lost funding for the shooter it was working on. While the studio thankfully didn’t shutter, Romero revealed that they’d to take a step back and evaluate their next steps.

Now, five months later, Romero has revealed that the project is alive, with the team back at work to complete it. He also said that the sport has modified quite lots since Microsoft pulled funding, however the trade off is that the devs could do exactly what they wanted and the present version of it’s more fun.

Romero Games’ Cancelled Shooter Is Back

Speaking at Salón del Videojuego de Madrid (thanks, Eurogamer), Romero said that the sport had been saved, and revealed a number of details. “There’s a very good 110 people working on the sport,” and it has “been mainly completely redesigned”. While lots has been stripped from the previous version of the sport, it “incorporates a whole lot of the weather” from the unique vision.

“We’re not starting at ground zero,” he added. “We are able to take pieces out of and put right into a brand recent indie game. We now have a whole lot of stuff we will put in the sport. The design is totally different, however the team may be very excited concerning the recent design.”

While the studio’s new edition of the sport is way smaller, Romero said that it feels “more fun” for the devs to work on, as “the people working on it are all directors from different departments, they usually didn’t actually get to the code or design or whatever to do it themselves, but now we get to truly try this”.

“[We get to] do the thing we’re really good at, ourselves. And, that is why small teams are great,” he added. As for what the sport shall be, he said it’s unlike any game he’s ever played, and it is going to still remain a shooter. “But, the things that you just do in it, shall be recent to people, the best way that going through Elden Ring was a very recent experience,” he said.

“It was a really crazy place, and a distinct world, and it was really cool to explore it and be like ‘what’s that?’,” Romero added. “That is the concept behind what we’re doing on this game.”
