WWE’s Damian Priest Was Nervous Ahead Of Bad Bunny Match: ‘I Hadn’t Proven Myself’

WWE star Damian Priest’s San Juan Street Fight against rapper, megastar, and WWE super fan Bad Bunny at WWE Backlash 2023 is something the previous World Heavyweight Champion has spoken about quite a bit, as he takes pride within the bout, a match fought in Puerto Rico, home turf for each Priest and Bunny. In a recent interview, nevertheless, on Prince St. Pizza’s YouTube channel, Priest revealed just a little more in regards to the match that he said he doesn’t often speak about: just how nervous he was.

“Not because I used to be wrestling… however the nerves of, if this just isn’t good, if this does not work, what happens to me and my profession?” Priest said.

Priest said that WWE wasn’t sure about running the show in Puerto Rico, something he said happens on a regular basis and wasn’t specific to the island. He said the rapper, specifically, wanted the match to occur there. They then had to come to a decision what sort of match they were doing, and it was presumably going to be one other tag match, like Priest and Bunny did at WrestleMania 37 against The Miz and John Morrison.

“Simply because, and rightfully so, they didn’t trust, a number of it needed to do with me, because I hadn’t proven myself in that sense yet,” he said. “But in addition with anybody, just normally, it’s just safer if you happen to just added more people, because we just never had done that before… But he was adamant that he desired to be one-on-one, especially on the island in Puerto Rico. I used to be actually adamant about it to, I just had quite a bit less pull than he did, especially at the moment.”

He explained they each wanted the singles match, because they knew what sort of impact it will have on the culture, and the economy, on the island.

San Juan Street Fight Success

Priest said when WWE finally agreed to the singles match, he was flying to LA every week to coach Bad Bunny. He said when the day of the match got here, he knew it was more vital than absolutely anything he was ever going to do.

“Winning championships, do not get me fallacious, winning the world title at WrestleMania is incredible, but having something that has an actual impact on the area people,” he said. “This was greater than only a dream. This was a dream I didn’t know I used to be having, put it that way. The proven fact that we went on the market after which killed it. Man, that one I used to be like, ‘I can retire immediately and I’m okay with it.’ And for him, I’ll say this, the one reason why it was good was he busted his a** to make sure that it was good. He brought it.”

Priest explained that since he’s known Bad Bunny, the rapper at all times needs to be “full throttle” if he will do something. Priest said it’s because he doesn’t need to embarrass himself or his people, and Bunny is “very prideful” in that sense.
