Gautam Gambhir can have tasted success in white-ball cricket as India head coach but in Tests, he has been subject to intense scrutiny after enduring two series whitewashes at home within the space of a yr. The Test team’s preference for allrounders has also been criticised and further put Gambhir’s approach in focus.
Last yr, India were stunned 0-3 by Recent Zealand in a three-match Test series at home and it proved decisive in them not qualifying for the ultimate of the ICC World Test Championship. More recently, they were outclassed by South Africa 0-2 in a two-Test series at home which triggered debate over India’s constant player rotation and reliance on part-timers.
The legendary Kapil Dev feels that in contemporary cricket, the term “coach” is usually misunderstood.
“Today, the word ‘coach’ could be very common. Gautam Gambhir can’t be a coach; he could be a manager of the team,” Kapil said on the Indian Chamber of Commerce ICC Centenary Session. “While you say coach, a coach is someone from whom I learned in class and college. Those individuals were my coaches; they managed me.”
Kapil further elaborated, “How are you going to be a coach when a particular role, like a leg spinner or wicket-keeper, is assigned? How can Gautam be a coach to a leg spinner or wicket-keeper?”
“I consider managing is more necessary. As a manager, you provide encouragement and support, helping young players to excel,” he stated.
“The role of a manager or captain is to provide comfort and reassurance to the team, urging them to perform higher.”
Kapil shared his own philosophy as captain, which involved supporting players during their lean phases.
“I feel it’s crucial to comfort those that aren’t performing well. If someone scores 100, I wouldn’t need to rejoice with them,” he said.
“There are various others… As a captain, I preferred to spend time with players who were struggling.”
“You might want to instill confidence in them, and that’s what makes a difference. It’s vital for a captain to focus not only on their very own performance but additionally on uniting the team.”
