4 US cricketers of Pakistani origin — Ali Khan, Shayan Jahangir, Mohammad Mohsin and Ehsan Adil — are awaiting visa clearance to travel to India for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, after attending scheduled appointments on the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
In keeping with a report by Cricbuzz, the quartet are currently in Sri Lanka with the USA squad as a part of their final phase of preparation for the February tournament. They accomplished their visa appointments on Tuesday, January 13, but visas weren’t issued on the appointment stage.
Importantly, there was no formal rejection.
Sources confirmed that the applications remain under review and are progressing through standard government procedures. In keeping with ICC officials, all documentation was submitted exactly as required ahead of the appointments.
“They’d the appointment this morning on the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka. They accomplished the paperwork as per what ICC had asked them to prior to the appointments,” a source told Cricbuzz.
“On the appointment, the players were informed that the visas couldn’t be processed at this stage. Later within the evening, USA management received a call from the Indian Embassy indicating that a number of the required information had been received, while additional inputs were still awaited from the Foreign Ministry. Once that process is complete, they might be contacted to proceed further. That’s the present status.”
Officials aware of the matter stressed that the review process is routine for special-category cases and is being handled strictly in keeping with Indian government protocols.
The situation gained public attention after Ali Khan posted an Instagram story referencing a “visa denial,” sparking speculation on social media.
Historically, visa applications involving players of Pakistani origin — no matter nationality or team affiliation — involve additional administrative layers. Similar processes have previously applied to international cricketers corresponding to Moeen Ali, Shoaib Bashir and Usman Khawaja when travelling to India.
These cases typically require clearances from multiple departments, including final approval from India’s Ministry of External Affairs — a process that operates independently of sporting bodies or tournament organisers.
The identical protocols apply across all teams within the World Cup, including squads from the UAE, Canada, Oman and Italy, which also feature players of Pakistani origin.
