As Intel continues to attempt to turn itself around, it’s CEO promised that the corporate will start producing a brand new form of chip, one which has been made highly regarded by rival Nvidia.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced that it’s going to start producing graphics processing units (GPUs) on the Cisco AI Summit on Tuesday. GPUs are more specialized processors, in comparison with the CPUs Intel traditionally produces, and are used for gaming and tasks like training artificial intelligence models.
TechCrunch reached out to Intel for more information.
The project will likely be overseen by Kevork Kechichian, the manager vp and general manager of Intel’s data center group, in line with reporting from Reuters. Kechichian was hired in September amongst a slew of latest engineer-focused hires.
Intel also hired Eric Demmers for the trouble in January. Demmers was previously at Qualcomm for greater than 13 years, most recently serving as a senior vp of engineering.
This initiative appears to be in relatively early stages as Tan said the corporate plans to develop its strategy around customer demands and wishes.
While Nvidia didn’t invent the GPU, that specific sort of chip has played a big role in its success. Its GPUs for AI systems are so advanced and popular, the chipmaker currently holds a commanding market lead.

It’s interesting to see Intel expand into this area now as Tan said the corporate can be consolidating and specializing in its core businesses when he took the helm as CEO last March. While GPUs are still semiconductors, after all, this continues to be a notable expansion.
